EMAIL SERVER

A mail server is a critical component to have if you are running your own web server. Even if you do not plan on providing email service to others outside of your home or office there are a number of reasons why running you own email server may be a good idea.

  • You can create as many email accounts as you'd like.
  • You can give away or sell email accounts to other users.
  • You can create an email account for subscriptions, separating spam accounts from business and personal accounts.
  • You can actively filter incoming mail as strictly or loosely as you wish.
  • You will have an SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) for sending mail through PERL and PHP scripts.

There is a long list of reasons why I use Argosoft Email Server, some of those reasons are:

  • It's an excellent alternative to running MS SMTP (too many security exploits)
  • It's built on very stable PERL technology, which makes it easy to integrate in to any application.
  • It's very easy to use and administer.
  • Has a webmail interface.
  • There are three versions all of which will fit into any software budget (freeware = free, shareware = $49 & pro = $88) You can compare the version here
  • There is an excellent community of Argosoft users which creates opensource materials and support.

INSTALLING

1) Download and Run the setup program leaving all of the installation options set to their default values.

2) Run the ArgoSoft application - Under the file menu select "Stop the Server"

3) Under Administrator - Set Your Main Password. Important, if you do not have a password and you have the webmail option turned on, users can easily gain access to the administration interface of your email server.

4) Under Tools > select "Options".

General - DNS Server should be entered here. If you are running you own DNS, enter your WAN IP or Just use your ISP's DNS.

Ports - Your Web Interface Port: Change it from 80 to 81 or whatever you want, just as long as it doesn't take over port 80. Apache Web Server will interfere if you use the same ports between both programs.

Logging - Recommend everything but the Web-Interface logging.

Advance - check the box next to "Do not use finger".

Tools - Security - Smtp Authentication. All boxes should be checked.

5) Tools - Configuration. Create a new domain. For example: If your domain is www.your-domain.com you would create a domain called your-domain.com

6) Click on your-domain.com. To the Right Window - Right-Click and "add new user". Create postmaster and any other users you wish to make at this time.

Note: a postmaster accounts is a wildcard or catch-all account, any email that is sent to your domain that does not have an account will end up in the postmaster account. Example if someone sends info@your-domain.com an email and you do not have an email user with the name "info" then the email will go to the postmaster account.

7) Close Configuration.

8) Click File under the file menu - Check the "Register Service". If it is not grayed out, then select it. If you are running Windows 95-98 this will not be an option.

9) Reboot. It's important that you reboot before you start using the software the first time. You will be able to see if all required files, startup etc.
